As a mixed media artist my work is informed by processes and concepts relevant to photography such as absence, presence, and the passage of time. I embrace media that lends itself conceptually to my work; photography with its ability to capture moments in time, yet be altered to suit the context, is ideal for me to explore. These explorations take many forms: site-responsive installations, still and moving image, traditional and alternative, analogue and digital, and most recently, textiles. The more technologically advanced media becomes the more I am inclined to gravitate towards the simplest techniques. Investigations in early pioneering photographic processes have led me to create handmade pinhole devices and experiment with camera-less processes as a way of commenting on what constitutes duration. Extremely long exposure pinhole photographs are one way that I document moments of everyday life, ultimately they portray absence, and capture presence. Incorporating digital media, I enjoy the juxtaposition of its speed and slickness in conjunction with the simplicity and sometimes crudeness of analogue processes. Unpredictable yet exciting results emerge from relying on chance elements such as gravity, random obstacles, the sun, or lack thereof, and time itself.
